Larger roof caps utilized for over-the-stove fans can easily cause leaks if not installed properly. Never rely on exposed caulk as the primary water barrier. Caulking is best used under the shingles to deter water from venturing any further than the caulk bead. When caulk is exposed to UV rays of the sun, it will break down extremely fast but when applied under the shingles it will last for the life of the shingle.
