50-Gallon Gas Water Heater Replacement

Replacement of an existing 50-gallon gas water heater in a garage with no recirculation pump.

Location: Garage

Recirculation Pump: No

Tasks:

Preparation and Shutoff:

1. Shut off gas supply valve

2. Close main water supply

3. Drain existing water heater to empty tank


Removal of Existing Unit:

1. Disconnect gas line from heater

2. Detach cold and hot water supply lines

3. Remove and dispose of old unit per local regulations


New Water Heater Installation:

1. Position new 50-gallon unit with adequate clearance per code

2. Install new drain pan beneath unit

3. Connect new stainless steel water supply lines (cold and hot)

4. Install 1/4-turn ball valve on cold water inlet

5. Install expansion tank, adjusted to home water pressure (typically 50-60 PSI)

6. Fit new gas shutoff valve on gas line

7. Attach new flexible gas supply line with sediment trap

8. Secure unit with Unistrut mounting and earthquake straps

9. Reconnect to existing T&P relief valve exit point

10. Insulate water supply lines for efficiency

11. Install copper bonding wire from water lines to gas line for grounding

12. Cover base/stand with sheet metal for protection


Venting and Combustion:

1. Install venting per manufacturer's specs (e.g., double-wall or single-wall as required)

2. Secure single-wall vent connections with 3 screws each

3. Verify adequate combustion air supply per code


Testing and Startup:

1. Pressure-test gas and water connections for leaks

2. Fill tank and purge air from lines

3. Test T&P relief valve operation

4. Light pilot, set temperature to 120°F (or per client preference), and confirm burner ignition

5. Validate full operational status


Cleanup and Final Steps:

1. Clear debris from work area

2. Haul away old unit for disposal

3. Conduct final inspection with client walkthrough

MOEN 1225B Cartridge Replacement

Replacement of a MOEN 1225B cartridge in a single-handle faucet to restore smooth operation, with noted risks of cartridge seizure.

Location: Bathroom or Kitchen

Tasks:

Preparation:

1. Shut off water supply to faucet (angle stops or main line).

2. Remove faucet handle by loosening set screw or cap.

3. Set up work area with drop cloth and tools (wrench, MOEN cartridge puller).


Cartridge Removal:

1. Remove retaining clip or nut securing old 1225B cartridge.

2. Use MOEN cartridge puller to extract cartridge, applying steady force.

3. Clean faucet body to remove scale or debris; inspect for damage.


Cartridge Installation:

1. Insert new MOEN 1225B cartridge, aligning tabs per orientation.

2. Secure cartridge with retaining clip or nut.

3. Reattach handle and tighten set screw or cap.


Testing:

1. Turn on water supply and check for leaks at faucet.

2. Test handle for smooth hot/cold operation and no drips.

3. Adjust cartridge alignment if handle motion is stiff.


Cleanup and Final Steps:

1. Wipe down faucet and sink area.

2. Dispose of old cartridge per local regulations.

3. Conduct client walkthrough to demonstrate operation.
