50-Gallon Gas Water Heater Replacement

Replacement of an existing 50-gallon gas water heater in a garage with no recirculation pump.

Location: Garage

Recirculation Pump: No

Tasks:

Preparation and Shutoff:

1. Shut off gas supply valve

2. Close main water supply

3. Drain existing water heater to empty tank


Removal of Existing Unit:

1. Disconnect gas line from heater

2. Detach cold and hot water supply lines

3. Remove and dispose of old unit per local regulations


New Water Heater Installation:

1. Position new 50-gallon unit with adequate clearance per code

2. Install new drain pan beneath unit

3. Connect new stainless steel water supply lines (cold and hot)

4. Install 1/4-turn ball valve on cold water inlet

5. Install expansion tank, adjusted to home water pressure (typically 50-60 PSI)

6. Fit new gas shutoff valve on gas line

7. Attach new flexible gas supply line with sediment trap

8. Secure unit with Unistrut mounting and earthquake straps

9. Install watts 210

10. Insulate water supply lines for efficiency

11. Install copper bonding wire from water lines to gas line for grounding

12. Cover pan outlet and install water alarms


Venting and Combustion:

1. Install venting per manufacturer's specs (e.g., double-wall or single-wall as required)

2. Secure single-wall vent connections with 3 screws each

3. Verify adequate combustion air supply per code


Testing and Startup:

1. Pressure-test gas and water connections for leaks

2. Fill tank and purge air from lines

3. Test T&P relief valve operation

4. Light pilot, set temperature to 120°F (or per client preference), and confirm burner ignition

5. Validate full operational status


Cleanup and Final Steps:

1. Clear debris from work area

2. Haul away old unit for disposal

3. Conduct final inspection with client walkthrough


Notes:

- Estimate valid for 60 days from issuance

- Includes permit fees (if required)

- Unforeseen issues or additional work will be quoted separately with client approval

- Exclusions: Drywall, paint, stucco, tile, concrete, stone repairs, or existing water damage

- Duration: 3-4 hours, 1 technician

- Warranty: Manufacturer - 6 years parts, 1 year labor; Conejo - 3 years labor

- Financing: 18 months at 0% interest available

- Qualifies for applicable utility rebates and federal tax credits (where available)

Customer supplied toilets:


Toilet Installation Customer Provided

Installation of a customer-provided toilet, including new wax ring, mounting bolts, stainless steel supply line, and caulking, with assessment of flange condition. No warranty on customer-provided parts or fixtures.

Tasks:

Preparation and Shutoff:

1. Shut off water supply at the angle stop valve.

2. Remove old toilet (if present) by disconnecting supply line and bolts.

3. Inspect flange for damage or wear, noting condition for potential repair.


New Toilet Installation:

1. Place new wax ring on flange or toilet base for secure seal.

2. Position customer-provided toilet over flange, aligning with mounting holes.

3. Secure toilet to floor with new corrosion-resistant mounting bolts.

4. Connect new stainless steel supply line from angle stop to toilet tank.

5. Apply silicone caulk around toilet base for a clean, sealed finish.


Testing and Adjustment:

1. Turn on water supply and fill tank, checking for leaks at supply line and base.

2. Flush multiple times to verify operation and seal integrity.

3. Adjust fill valve to set water level per manufacturer specs, if provided.


Cleanup and Final Steps:

1. Wipe down toilet and surrounding area to remove debris or caulk residue.

2. Dispose of old toilet (if applicable) per local regulations.

3. Conduct client walkthrough to demonstrate flush and stability.

- Customer-provided toilet must be compatible with existing plumbing.

- No warranty on customer-provided parts or fixtures; labor warranty applies to installation only.
