Water Main Replacement

Replace a damaged or deteriorated water main, including a new ball valve and pressure relief valve, to restore reliable water supply, maintain pressure, and prevent leaks or contamination in residential or commercial properties. The water main, typically a 3/4-inch to 2-inch pipe connecting the municipal supply or well to the building, may fail due to age, corrosion, or external damage, causing low pressure, water loss, or water quality issues. This replacement involves excavating the existing main, installing new copper or HDPE piping, and adding a ball valve for easy shut-off and a pressure relief valve to protect against pressure surges (above 150 psi). The process ensures compliance with local codes, minimizes water service interruptions, and enhances system durability and safety.

Location: Exterior (Underground or Near Meter)

Tasks:

Preparation:

1. Assess water main condition and verify replacement requirements with utility provider.

2. Shut off water supply at the meter or main valve and notify utility, if required.

3. Set up work area with tools (excavator, pipe cutter, fittings, PPE) and safety barriers.

Excavation:

1. Excavate trench along new water main path, typically 12-18” deep, to access existing pipe.

2.Prepare trench for new pipe, ensuring proper slope and bedding per code.

Pipe and Valve Installation:

1. Install new HDPE water main (2”) connecting to meter and building supply line.

2. Once we reach left side of garage door will transition pipe from poly to copper.

3. Run exposed copper 2” from entry point to existing water main.(line will be secured with unistrut and cushion clamps.

4. Install full-port ball valve for main shut-off and pressure relief valve to protect against surges.

5. Secure connections with appropriate fittings (e.g., compression or soldered joints) for leak-free performance.

6. Reconnect to Backflow system 1-1/4 right under threaded ball valve.

Testing and Restoration:

1. Restore water supply and perform pressure test (e.g., 80-120 psi) to confirm no leaks.

2. Backfill trench with compacted soil and restore surface (e.g., grass or gravel), if within scope.

3. Run water to fixtures to verify pressure, flow, and no contamination.

Cleanup and Final Steps:

1. Clean work area and dispose of old piping and debris per local regulations.

2. Provide client with new water main specifications and valve operation instructions.

3. Conduct walkthrough to confirm restored water service and discuss maintenance.

Existing house domestic water system is piped with under slab soft copper and is experiencing leaks. Existing system can continue to get persistent minor to major leaks and is recommended to re pipe.

Multiple holes will be cut in drywall by customer to perform re pipe project. Conejo does not repair or replace drywall damage nor is it included in this estimate. Drywall will be cut and removed by homeowner. Home owner has had environmental testing completed and had negative results.

New system will consist of uponor pex material, range in size from 1” to 1/2” and be ran overhead.

All new piping will be insulated, strapped, and isolated through all penetrations.

This installation qualifies for $1000.00 off of a tankless water heater or whole house water purification system installation.

This estimate includes a copper garage surface mounted water main from water service to water heater.
