50 Gallon Heat Pump Water Heater
Note: electrical work to be quoted separately by Conejo electrician.
This estimate does include running copper to the new location and condensation line away from the water heater with condensate pump.
Install a 50-gallon heat pump water heater, an energy-efficient system that uses ambient air or ground heat to warm water, significantly reducing energy consumption compared to traditional electric or gas water heaters. Unlike conventional models that generate heat directly via electric resistance or gas combustion, a heat pump water heater transfers heat from the surrounding environment using a compressor and refrigerant cycle, achieving energy efficiencies up to 3-4 times higher (with Energy Factors of 2.5-3.5). Benefits include lower utility bills (up to 60% energy savings), reduced carbon footprint, and eligibility for energy rebates or tax incentives in many regions. This system is ideal for moderate climates and well-ventilated spaces, requiring adequate airflow (typically 750-1000 cubic feet) for optimal performance. The installation includes code-compliant components like an expansion tank, T&P relief valve, and seismic straps, ensuring safety and longevity in residential settings.
Garage
Tasks:
Preparation:
1. Verify space requirements (min. 10x10x7 feet for airflow) and electrical supply (240V, 30A circuit).
2. Shut off water supply and remove existing water heater, draining the tank.
3. Set up work area with tools (pipe wrench, electrical tester, level, PPE) and drop cloths.
Heater Installation:
1. Position 50-gallon heat pump water heater on a level base, ensuring 6-12 inches clearance for airflow.
2. Connect cold water inlet and hot water outlet using copper or PEX piping with dielectric unions.
3. Install seismic straps to secure heater to wall or floor, per local codes.
Component Installation:
1. Install expansion tank on cold water inlet to manage thermal expansion.
2. Install T&P relief valve with discharge line (3/4-inch copper/CPVC) to an approved drain.
3. Connect condensate drain line to route water to a floor drain or pump (if required).
Electrical and Testing:
1. Wire heater to a dedicated 240V circuit, ensuring proper grounding per code.
2. Test heat pump operation, verifying compressor and fan functionality.
3. Perform leak tests on all water and gas connections, and test T&P valve discharge.
Cleanup and Final Steps:
1. Dispose of old water heater and debris per local regulations.
2. Provide client with user manual and explain operation modes (e.g., hybrid, electric).
3. Conduct walkthrough to demonstrate heater functionality and maintenance.
Notes:
- Energy-efficient alternative to traditional water heaters, ideal for eco-conscious homes.
- Requires adequate ventilation; additional ducting or space modifications quoted separately.
- Advise client to clean air filters monthly and check condensate drain regularly.
- Estimate valid for 60 days from issuance
- Includes permit fees (if required)
- Unforeseen issues or additional work will be quoted separately with client approval
