Pinnacle Roofing was dispatched to Brookdale to remove ice dams that had formed on part of their roof. Ice dams are created from freeze - thaw cycle: when melting snow freezes overnight and then the following days the snow melts again. However, this time the ice formed from the night before creates a dam, backing up water up the shingles and into the structure.
Remedy - The first step is to remove all the snow from the affected roof area. Accumulated ice can delicately removed, but can be left to melt as chipping way at the ice can damage the roof. Pinnacle Roofing is able to assist and clears roofs of accumulated snow.
Prevention - Ice dams usually occur because of poor insulation or lack ventilation to the attic. Rising heat into the attic can melt the snow, therefore properly insulating the attic is important for both ice dam prevention and energy savings. Second, if the attic is improperly vented, an attic need both an intake for air to enter and an exhaust for air to escape, then trapped warm, moist air can cause ice dams on the roof and mold in the attic. A certified roofer can verify the roof is properly vented and add vents as needed. Lastly, heating coils can be placed on ice prone areas such as north facing sections that see little light during winter and take longer for the snow to dissipate off the roof.
