Pinnacle Roofing was in Johnston, RI to make an emergency roof replacement. This house has a mansard roof, which is a distinctive roof with two slopes on each side, the lower one being much steeper, designed to create extra usable living space (a garret) within the top floor. The complex design can add living space, but has a higher cost due to additional roofing materials and potential water drainage issues, especially where slopes meet.
Unfortunately, the previous homeowner had an additional put on the house, and where the addition met the old house, the contractor installed vinyl siding. While roofing can be installed on various pitches (typically 2:12 or higher for shingles), vinyl siding has specific limitations regarding its placement. Vinyl siding is engineered exclusively for vertical wall surfaces and is not a suitable substitute for roofing material on any pitch.
Vinyl siding lacks the structural integrity and waterproofing required for sloped or horizontal planes. It is designed to shed water vertically. If installed on a roof-like slope, water will seep through the laps and seams, leading to leaks and structural rot.
